Inspired by Space

Between the shuttle mission this week to repair the Hubble telescope and the new Star Trek movie that I just saw, and LOVED, I am totally geeking out on space stuff this week and have nothing more to add.

Here is the famous "Blue Marble" shot from the Apollo 17 mission. Feast your eyes!

  1. My eyes flooded as I gazed on the blue marble and contemplated Magellan, and Ponce de Leon, and Christopher Columbus, and all those intrepid explorers who dared to sail across unknown oceans and forge into land masses they had no idea of the extent of. And those ancient map-makers who somehow figured it all out without GPS or satellite imagery. what a triumph of imagination. I think too of my grandmother, born in 1888, who was glued to her television set for every space launch in the 1960's. I think the space missions are worth funding for the same reasons the arts are - for pure celebration of the human spirit.
